Daniel Shortt is a regulatory and corporate attorney. With experience in the hemp and marijuana industries, he advises federal agencies, top-tier cannabis corporations, and ambitious entrepreneurs in entering, succeeding in, and exiting the industry. Daniel provides highly tailored advice on heavily regulated topics, including contracts, regulatory guidance, administrative advice, employment issues, real estate transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and general legal counsel.
Frequently speaking on legal issues relating to cannabis across the country and abroad, Daniel is quoted on cannabis law in publications including Marijuana Moment, Hemp Industry Daily, The Washington Post, and Bloomberg, to name a few. As a founding member of the Washington State Bar Association’s cannabis law section and as a prolific writer on national and state-specific cannabis topics, Daniel has been instrumental in helping to shape the legal landscape of the industry.
In the complex landscape of cannabis and hemp regulation across multiple states, Daniel analyzes diverse approaches and distills complex legal concepts into clear, understandable explanations. Driven by his belief that lawyers should be an integral part of a client’s team, he strives to bridge the gap between legal intricacies and business goals as a trusted partner for clients navigating the complexities of these evolving markets.
While studying at University of Washington School of Law, Daniel worked extensively with the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board to fund and establish the Cannabis Law and Policy Project (CLPP). He then served as the editor of the CLPP blog and as a Hazelton Fellow researching cannabis law. Daniel also interned for the Oregon Supreme Court Justice Richard Baldwin and the Seattle City Attorney.
