Susan Burns – S Burns Legal PLLC

With more than 30 years of experience, Susan Burns has forged a career as a no-nonsense business lawyer and global development consultant helping businesses in growth mode tactically use legal strategies to meet their needs. Serving a broad range of industries, Susan has been a partner to businesses tackling the burgeoning cannabis industry since the outset, supporting processors, manufacturers and retailers. She has also worked extensively with psychotherapy and health-related clinics, microbiology consultants and tech startups. Susan also focuses on global business expansion, particularly in Mexico and Costa Rica. 

Functioning as an on-call business partner, Susan is general counsel and strategic business advisor to her clients, crafting creative solutions to unexpected issues and partnering with trusted professionals from her extensive network when necessary. She loves interacting with socially engaged clients and audiences and has become a go-to industry expert speaking at top tier cannabis and business associations and conferences. Susan also a regular contributor to  The Cannabis Law Journal.

With a practice focused on “doing well by doing good,” Susan guiding principle is “a bit of world-bettering is always encouraged.” She thrives on working with businesses that make a buck and a positive impact. Before launching her own firm, Susan worked in general practice with small law firms as well as large-scale litigation with top Minnesota law firms.

Susan is consistently listed among the Top 200 Global Cannabis Lawyers and holds leadership roles in the American Bar Association’s Section of International Law as Communications Office and Advisor to the Mexico Committee and the Food, Ag, and Cannabis Committee. She is also a board member of the Minnesota Organic Advisory Task Force.

A Minnesota native, Susan earned her J.D. from Hamline University School of Law (now Mitchell-Hamline) and her B.A. from the College of St. Benedict and holds an LL.M. in Food and Agriculture Law from the University of Arkansas. She is the founding partner of S Burns Legal PLLC, is licensed in Minnesota and Arkansas, and is fluent in Spanish.
